An underdog is an individual athlete or an entire team that has a low chance of winning a selected sporting event. An underdog is also called an outsider. Those who are characterized by the maximum chances of winning are the favorites.
As a rule, the team of outsiders is much inferior to the opponents in terms of skill, strength and class. If there are opponents in the match, whose strengths and capabilities are approximately equal, it is said that the game will be held without favorites and outsiders.
How do you identify an underdog?
In the bookmaker’s line, it is not difficult to determine the underdog for the selected sporting event. Usually, this is the team or player for which the highest betting odds are placed. So, for example, the probability of the victory of the guests is quite small. Strong opponents, as well as the hosts of the event on their home field, win more often. Accordingly, low odds are set for the strong link, and high odds are set for the weak or guests – about 7-8.
Is it worth betting on the underdog?
Logically, it makes no sense to bet on an outsider. But it may seem so only at first glance. Betting on underdogs brings variety to betting and can really be winning. Of course, the outcome with the victory of outsiders rarely happens. But sports in general, and football matches in particular, are highly unpredictable. The result of the match can be unexpected, and then the outsider wins or the game ends in a draw. Motivation to win a particular battle is of great importance. It happens that the average team quickly takes the lead due to their own professionalism or due to the tired opposing team.
Following the strategy of betting on underdogs, you need to:
- Take a close look at the line.
- choose a match in which even the favorite will have to fight and sweat well on the field;
- choose matches (football) “for elimination”, where a draw is impossible;
- Place bets with small amounts.
In practice, bookmakers often overestimate the strength of the favorites, and therefore the outcomes of the games are often stunning. Therefore, there are cases of outsiders winning, and they are not as few as it seems. You can bet on underdogs both for your own variety and to get new sensations.
